My assignments for each week will be posted here, so you can keep up even when you're out.

We will also have a few online quizzes and tests, but those will be held in eClass.

Week of 5/11

REMEMBER TO BACK UP ALL OF YOUR PERSONAL WORK TO A DEVICE OTHER THAN A SCHOOL COMPUTER OR NETWORK DRIVE.  Time is running out!!

Many classes did not finish watching movies last week, so that's step 1.  This may or may not carry over into Tuesday.

Also, whenever you have spare time, make sure to continue practicing those online quizzes, they will make up the majority of your Final Multiple Choice exam next week.

Finally, you're going to make your last "invention pitch".  Some of you like apps, some like games, some like gadgets.  I was at a lawyer's office on Friday afternoon helping 3 10th graders get their patent submitted.  One of our investors wants to do more of this!   So, your final assignment is to create a "pitch", a very quick summary of your app, game or gadget.  It should include:

  • Name of your product
  • A description of what it does
  • A persuasive argument about why it would be in demand by customers
  • As many pictures as necessary to get the point across  (graphic layouts or screenshots, whatever
I will REALLY be sharing this with an investor, as examples of other products in your minds.  You can do this solo, with others, etc.  Keep in mind, if this got real, would you REALLY want to share money with this person?  Angry Birds, a pretty silly game, made $170 million in 2014, "WhatsApp" was sold to Facebook for $19 BILLION.  Check out Kickstarter.com, where people get REAL money for their ideas!

MakerFest projects for CDAT students are due at the end of the week.

We will give students an open work day Monday, as they will most likely not have one in other classes due to EOCT's (Milestones tests).

Starting Tuesday, we're going to do some video editing, because it's fun and a very useful communication tool.

You should be able to know the resolution of your video, upload it to your software, splice it, add titles, add transitions.  Don't worry about angles, views, etc. yet, just how to edit.

I will show a sample, then some basics.  We will also be doing some special effects in After Effects:  http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-after-effects-cs5/

By the end of next week, you will need to do the following:
  • Outline the movie you're going to make (in writing,  be a director and script writer!)  - movies must be acceptable content according to school standards - would you want to sit next to Dr. G and your Mom while watching your movie?
  • Schedule when you are going to shoot film, edit film.  You can't use that Microsoft animal film, you must find or make other sources.
  • Demonstrate the following techniques:
    • Titles
    • Transitions
    • Sounds effects and/or music (in addition to sound from film)
    • Ending credits
      • List credits for any sources of movie clips, sounds, art, etc.
Your movie will be shown to the class at the end of next week.  It is limited to 2 minutes.  You may work in as a pair or alone.
Spend a day or two learning the software a bit, and writing your script/storyboard, as well as writing your schedule.

Keep it simple!!  The fewer people and effects the better.  Also, film the same thing multiple times, from multiple angles.  And, you can always separate the sound from the video, so you can show one thing while hearing another.

I will be looking for your plan and script/storyboard by Thursday, 4/30.

SPG!

Short for spaghetti?  No!  It's Student Performance Goals!  

It is required, and you take yours Tuesday.  It IS part of your grade, and could be up to a 2-point difference in your final average.  So, do you best.  It can't hurt you badly, but it sure can help!  For those who are not doing well in a class, this is one of those chances to say "See, I learned it!"


Monday - take those online practice quizzes over and over and over.  

Tuesday - we take the SPG, take your time!

Friday your portfolio is due, so make sure you check it all on Wednesday and Thursday, have someone else look through it too.  This is 10% of your grade, possibly a full letter grade up or down for you, so focus on this one!!!!

Welcome back.  You will have the next two weeks (10 hours in class) to finalize your Performance Final, which is YOUR personal web portfolio.  This is 10% of your entire semester grade, so very important for all.

Here's a link to the instructions, how it will be graded, etc.  We will review the required projects, some good portfolio examples and some design principles on Monday, April 13.  

This is due April 24, no later.

This week we will start reviewing "big data".  What does that mean?  It relates to the massive amounts of information available, and the need to make sense of it.  From things like phone call records (estimated 6 billion people have access to a cell phone, only 4.5 billion have access to a toilet) to a self-driving car that takes in 1.3 million pieces of data per second, there is a LOT of data in the world!

We are going to use Google's "Making Sense of Data" course to understand "data" a little better.  Using your Google Apps accounts, we are going to use Fusion tables to learn to gather, read and understand data.

The course does have some videos on YouTube, but I have downloaded them, and put them into the Shared Drive (TechEd > Reilly > CSP) so you can see them.  They are not important, just informative and introductory.

Also, one weird thing about the the course:  they frequently put questions before the lessons, to make you think.  Don't worry about getting it wrong, we'll be doing other data things as exercises.
The course refers to a "certificate of completion".  They don't offer it anymore, just the free course.

We will be doing the Units during this week by Thursday, then the Final Project during the week after break, then our own quizzes.

For the Final Project, you should be using the questions listed in the Final Project 1 and 2.  We will do this a little differently though.  I will show you how to put Google Fusion Tables into your Chrome browser, and it allows you to search public data sources.  YOU need to find data, and do the following:
  1. Understand the "schema" - what does the data represent, and how is it organized?
  2. List some questions you think of when you see the data.  You might not find the answers, but you usually start with some kind of curiosity.
  3. Summarize the data in some way.  You probably need to play with this, and practice the things you've learned.  List things in order, create averages, create "buckets", and more.  Go back to the course, or go here for tips.
  4. Create some kind of chart about your data: bar charts, or scatter plots, heat maps, whatever you want. 
  5. After all of that digging, what information did you discover?  You don't have to answer your original questions, but did you?  Did you find something interesting that was not something you initially considered?
Type up your findings, capture your graphics, and put this onto your portfolio on a page titled "Big Data".  
Don't forget, a portfolio page should also have the story behind the assignment.  Like "We were asked to .... So, I decided to ..... What I found was...."

This week should be the last where I'm out a lot.  Sorry about that, all school stuff.  This week is FIRST robotics championships.  Thursday, Friday and Saturday are the FIRST Robotics Regional Championships.  Watch your team live at the Georgia World Congress Center on Saturday, or online at http://www.thebluealliance.com/event/2015gadu

  • Mon, we'll review Sections 1.1 to 1.6, Game Design, 
  • Tues we will review Section 2, Hardware
  • Wednesday - Practice quizzes are on eClass for Objectives 1 and 2.  Take these for a "classwork" grade.  If you take it, you get a passing grade.  However, practice them for the real thing on Friday.  Then review Objective 3: Graphics.
  • Thurs review Section 4, Animation  - I messed up!!  This was already in Objective 2, I'm not smart.  However that means you have practiced it a lot on Wednesday, so Thursday is the real thing!  Take the Microsoft Game Dev quiz online.
  • After you take the quiz Thursday, start reading this article, sent to me by a pro game developer:

  • By the end of Friday's class, I want you to write a discussion post on one thing you found MOST interesting and why.  Also, what product do you think of the most for YOU when you read this?  Go to "Discussions" in eClass.

Some cool and geeky holidays:

The 100 year PI Day - 3.14.15 9:26:53.59  was Saturday, Ides of March Sunday, and St. Patrick's Day Tuesday.  (By the way, my formal name is Michael Patrick Sean Reilly)

So,the week:
  • Monday - last week for projects, how you doin'?  Get to work!
  • Tuesday - I will let you practice the terms quiz once more each.  Write down words you don't know for studying...
  • Wednesday - online quiz!  Then, show me your project.  It should be DONE Friday, so should be very close to done today.  You will have the chance to get feedback.
  • Thursday - Wrap up projects based on Wednesday feedback.
  • Friday - Deliver projects.  AND you should take the online classroom assessment "Multiple Choice Exam Preview" at least once.  There is no password.  This is a quiz grade, but it is also a preview of your multiple choice final exam, if you didn't get that by the name.

Week of 3/9-3/13

Monday I will be in the building, but will have a sub.  We have visitors from California, so be ready to show your work.

I should have your practice quiz up on Monday, so, uh, practice it!  Also, I will be looking at your plans for the week on Tuesday, first thing, probably while you quiz you can pull it up.

Tues - Fri you should have a plan for the project and follow that plan.  

Next week we will have a quiz on some other general topic like this one.  All of these quizzes will make up your final.  

The topics of next weeks quiz are "networks".  The internet, if you recall, is a network of networks.  So, what's a network?  it's this stuff:   
  • types of network topologies (bus, ring, star, mesh),  
  • routing/routers, 
  • WAN, LAN, MAN, WLAN
  • web server
  • database server
  • Switches, 
  • Bridges, 
  • Gateways, 
  • WAP,IP, FTP, HTTP
  • Firewalls.

Week of 3/2-3/6

Hola!

A great weekend of tech success with 7 groups placing at the County Science Fair, and 15 young ladies recognized at the National Center for Women In Technology at Georgia Tech!

This week:  most people do not have a plan for the week listed.  That needs to happen by the end of tomorrow's class period, to be checked tomorrow afternoon.

Monday: we are going to talk about registration for electives.  You've probably been assigned to your next core classes (Math, Science, Social Studies, LA), but now it's elective time!

Then, the rest of the week is your project.  Wednesday we will review some standards (click here), for a quiz.

On Thursday, you will be able to practice the quiz unlimited times, and on Friday you will take it once for your real score.  It's called Internet and Devices Quiz on Classroom Assessments.


Week of Feb. 23-27

There was a chance I was going to be here all week, but no.  Meeting at the County on Thursday, sorry.

However, you really don't need me anyways.  I didn't need a programming teacher, I learned all by myself (okay, but it's easier to have someone who can answer questions.

You should have completed some Unity and some MIT App Inventor, as well as EarSketch, so you have really covered the introduction to programming. Based on your coding experience, ALL students in IDT will be taking a quiz.  Here's your study guide.

I will review those terms in class on Monday.  Quiz will be Tuesday.

Also, all students should have a STEM Maker Fest project submitted.  We will clarify that on Monday, but most should be submitted by now.  Whether you're in CDAT, or not in CDAT, you're drafting a working project.  I am going to prioritize feedback on your projects, so you can work on them the rest of the week.  Check out this link for project details, deadlines:  http://cdat9.lanierhs.org/projects2014/project5-stemmakerfest
