In the meantime……..

We are looking to build a garden here at Lanier!

School gardens grow more than just plants.  Research has shown that students who participate in school garden programs not only improve their academic achievement; but also improve their knowledge of healthy nutrition, expand their tastes in food choices, and increase their intake of fruits and vegetables.  The school garden has also been shown to enhance community and social development.

Before starting a community or school garden, it is important to consider which type of garden is appropriate for your current and future needs and the amount of time and resources your situation will require.

Your task will be to create a master plan to build a garden in the space outlined in the picture below (the yellow circle does not imply the garden is circular, just marking the area).

You may recognize this area as the northeast corner of the school building by the faculty parking lot.

Each of you are tasked with:

  • Choosing a method of gardening.

  • Designing a to-scale garden layout. What size is the garden? What size is a bed, or length of aquaponic pipe?  Your design must be accessible to people with disabilities, which will effect heights and space between the beds. What is the distance to water source, electric source? This is a rough blueprint.

  • Generate a specific list of materials to create your masterpiece.

Keep in mind you have questions to ask yourself:

  • How does the garden get watered? Where do you get it?

  • How is the garden protected from animals, inclimate weather, bored teenagers?

  • Will you need electricity? If so, how will it be distributed?

  • How can you maximise the use of the space?

Choose either type for your design, but be prepared to express the pros and cons of either system







Create Google Doc with your work, and submit a draft by the end of class. 
This will be graded!
What we will be looking for in your document
  • Having a document
  • Addressing water access/use
  • Addressing electric access/use
  • For scale drawing up
  • For “defense against the dark side” (animals, bored teens)
  • Addressing accessiblity

We will be walking around the room to check on your progress and help guide your designs
We will be discussing these designs as our basis for a real, future garden.
