Week of August 17

This is the first week where we'll have one class 3 times, and another class two times, so please excuse my imbalance.  The goals are the same, but one class might not finish as much as another.

Last week we finished up Safety, and then we moved on to learning about wheels and gearing.  We will review the other aspects of the VEX Unit 8 on Mechanical Power, then we will incorporate information about motors.

An example of a "gearing" question:  what if you had a 6" wheel and had a goal of 20MPH, with a motor that spins 3000rpm, what kind of gear ratio would you need to involve?  If I give you a wheel, a speed, a motor, and a gear ratio, you should be able to find any one of the items given 3 of the 4.

Your second meeting of the week will be a quiz on these topics from Unit 8

There are SO many different types of motors, and SO many specs (specifications) for each one, so we're going to learn to read the specs of a motor so that we can choose which might be appropriate.  You can see many motors in our own shop, and you might even have some of your own that you could evaluate.  We will then apply those motor specs to what you already know.

Finally, we will take a look at some robot kits.  We will organize them, find missing parts, and then you're going to build!!!
You should build the "kit" to get an idea of how to build, then you will choose to build the fastest OR the strongest robot car.  Then, we fight!

On Thursday/Friday, you should be start building the "kit bot", the one with instructions, so you can see how it all works.  Then, Monday/Tuesday, your team should choose to make a "drag racer" (fastest robot) or a "bulldozer" (strongest robot), and we battle it out (hopefully Wedneday/Thursday of next week).
