Week of Aug. 31

Some of you have not taken, or not properly submitted, the Safety Quiz on eClass.  Do so this week.

Hopefully you've had fun with the robot challenge so far.  I've seen some cool robots using a decent gear ratio for speed, we'll see who has the fastest...

This week we will wrap up the robot build.  During the early part of the week, we will talk about some terminology regarding the robots and their parts, their concepts.  In addition, we'll review how to calculate acceleration based on the motors, weight and gearing.  This might help you finish the robot, and it will be the basis of your next quiz.

Some terms to know:
  • Motor
  • Gear
  • Gear ratios (gear down, gear up)
  • Pulley
  • Belt
  • Spacer
  • Computer
  • Controller
  • Torque
  • Acceleration
  • Force
  • Friction
  • Scrub torque
  • Load
  • Stall torque
  • Washer
  • Camber
  • Sensor

Here are the notes on Calculating Acceleration

To wrap up the week, we need to clean up the robots, do an inventory again, which allows me to buy new parts more accurately for the next build.  You might be using them again, as they are a great way to learn about concepts.

Looking ahead, we will now have the basis for starting to design the real thing, your go-kart.  We are a LONG way off from actually building it, but it will be built.
