I will be out the rest of the week do to some unforeseen family medical issues.
Please be respectful for the substitute!!

Key Question: How can we best create a digital prototype for analyzing our solutions?

Activities: Students begin exploring their “base map” prototype. Students also begin learning key features of Google Earth and reasons for using these.

Enabling Learning Activities:

Task 1: Quick Write: The Advisory Panel requires a digital prototype. You have probably seen research that shows mapped data and tabular data. Do you think your gathered data would be best presented in Excel, a map, or both? Why?

Task 2:  Use Google Earth Geographic Information System (GIS) using a selected local or state online GIS map to preview:

Mimic your teacher’s actions during the GIS demonstration:

          Navigating, Zoom, and Pan

Legend: Discuss items in legend and if they are easily visible?

Highlight ability to turn layers on and off as a means of customizing the map display.

How could we combine this data to get more information?

In project teams, repeat the Quick Write Exercise. The advisory panel requires a digital prototype. You have probably seen research that shows mapped data and tabular data. Do you think your gathered data would be best presented in Excel, a map, or both? Why?

Task 3: Exploration of the local area, using Google Earth. The exploration covers the common features (City and County Polygons, Stream and Waterbody Polylines, Aerial Photos, and other features) of the dataset, and how each can be used.

Watch and take notes on the following Google Earth overviews at http://www.google.com/earth/outreach/learn/

Tutorials to review:

          Annotate Google Earth

          Add Views and Perspectives

          Create a Narrated Tour

Task 4: Individually, create a map for a location in your community. It can be any location as this exercise is research for using GIS later in the project. The map should include each of the following items:

          Annotate:

o        Placemark

o        Path

o        Polygon

o        For each of the above items, apply appropriate names and symbols to allow users to see all features clearly.

           Legends, Logos, and Banners

          A Storytelling Map

When complete, save the Google Earth project for later use.

Discuss any issues encountered with your teammates and see detailed instructions on creating each of these elements at: https://www.google.com/earth/outreach/tutorials/

Save your maps, load onto your portfolio, and discuss your decisions and the elements you added within your teams. Create a master list of all team members’ ideas and elements in your Engineering Notebooks.

Task 4: In teams, review your Project Management Plans. The research discovered over the past days allows you to create a more detailed Project Calendar and Project Management Log. Update these elements to reflect anticipated tasks to complete the project.
